Metro Association Fall 2013 Meeting
“New Heaven and New Earth:  Mission and Money in the New Millennium”

Saturday, November 9, 2013
Corona Congregational Church, UCC
102-18 34th Avenue
Corona, NY 11368

Rev. Dr. Patrick G. Duggan
Rev. Dr. Patrick G. Duggan

Rev. Dr. Patrick G. Duggan, who is both the Pastor of the Congregational Church of South Hempstead and the Executive Director of the UCC Church Building and Loan Fund, made it clear to all those who had ears to hear that “Ministry must move the money”.  He believes the mission of the 21st century is the economy, for the greatest injustice of today is in money.  In the US, 49.7 million people, or one-sixth of the nation’s populations, live below the poverty line.

In his role with the Church Building and Loan Fund, Duggan explained that the money entrusted to this 160-year old fund is used to help new (defined as less than 30 years old) and “renewing”  churches with financing and consulting for building and renovation projects.  Chuck Hollingsworth and Rev. Daehler Hayes explained that the Cornerstone Fund, established in 1993, collaborates with the Church Building and Loan Fund and provides loans, revolving lines of credit and consultation for building repair, improvement or expansion projects.  The Cornerstone Fund now has $75 million invested by individuals, local churches and other religious groups, with 30 churches and 43 individuals in the NY Conference having a relationship with this Fund.

Also in the realm of good financial management, delegates to the Fall Meeting received a report of stable Metro finances for 2013 and approved a budget for 2014 which projects $184,500 in revenue and $182,184 in expenses.  Treasurer Bonnie Duval also reported the Association now has a “fully functioning” Finance Committee.

Rev. Phyllis O. Byrd
Rev. Phyllis O. Byrd

Rev. Phyllis Byrd, our visiting missionary, gave a brief report of the work she does in Africa from her base in Nairobi, Kenya.  She said we should consider it “our work”, for it is possible because of the generosity of the United Church of Christ, the Disciples of Christ and the Presbyterian Church (USA).

Melva Victorina and Yvette Wynn reported on recent cooperation between our ecumenical partners in Germany, the Protestant Churches of Hessen & Nassau (EKHN), Frankfurt and Weisbaden.  Victorina and Rev. Peter Dennebaum (from Germany) planned a series of meetings September 9 – 15 in seven Metro churches for 19 clergy from Berlin.  Wynn said she was deeply moved by her recent visit to Germany which is already celebrating the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther’s posting of the 95 Theses.  Her trip included a visit to the Buchenwald concentration camp.

Registrar Margaret Mainusch
Registrar Margaret Mainusch

Twelve written reports were presented at the Fall Meeting.  In addition to the oral reports noted above, Registrar Margaet Mainusch reported more than 40 churches were in attendance, thus constituting a quorum for the conduct of business.  She also urged us to be more diligent in attending the ecclesiastical councils where candidates for ordination are examined for their fitness for Christian ministry.

Board President Lennox Grant
Board President Lennox Grant

Board president Lennox Grant closed the business meeting by asking all clergy to rise so we might thank them for their dedicated services.

Many clergy and lay persons led the inspirational opening worship, some of whom are pictured on the linked pages.
